Tennessee routs Kennesaw State, turns sights to top-ranked Texas

The Tennessee Volunteers secured a dominant victory against the Kennesaw State Owls on Saturday night in Knoxville. With Tennessee playing down against a nonpower opponent, the subtext of the game became about Kennesaw head coach Jerry Mack returning to Knoxville, as well as offensive coordinator Mitch Militello, who also spent time in Knoxville. The Volunteers took control early and never looked back, showcasing a balanced offensive attack and a stingy defense throughout four quarters of play.
Quarterback Faizon Brandon led the passing game by completing 18 of 26 passes for 178 yards and one touchdown, while running back Daune Morris powered the ground attack with 116 yards on 14 carries, including a brilliant 42-yard rushing touchdown. Braylon Staley contributed through the air with four receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown, and defensive standout Arion Carter anchored the defense with eight tackles and one sack.
Kennesaw State fought hard behind quarterback Rickie Collins, who threw for 189 yards and rushed for 36 yards, alongside Zion Booker who hauled in 10 catches for 78 yards, but the Owls ultimately fell short due to being outmanned.
With the final non-conference game in the rear-view mirror, Tennessee turns its full attention to a massive upcoming showdown. The stage is officially set for an unforgettable weekend on Rocky Top, as the Volunteers will host the top-ranked Texas Longhorns next Saturday at 12:00 in Neyland Stadium. It will be the first time the two teams have met since the 60s and will be littered with various storylines.
